The market for online car sales is growing rapidly. Companies such as Bynco, AutoTrack Easy Buy and Auto.nl have paved the way for consumers who want to buy their cars entirely online. But each of these platforms also has its limitations. Carvendo takes a slightly different approach: we combine the convenience of online with the security of the dealer, and bring everything together in one ecosystem: buying, financing and insuring.

Bynco; fully online, but not a hybrid

Bynco was one of the first platforms in the Netherlands to introduce the concept of buying a car entirely online. The idea was innovative: you simply order your car via the website and then get it delivered to your home, often with a “no good, money back” guarantee. For many consumers, this sounded like a modern and safe way to buy a used car.

However, there was also a downside to this model. Although Bynco.com worked partly with dealers and therefore did not have its own inventory, the process was fully digital. This meant that, as a customer, you often only saw the car in real life after the decision moment. So your decision was made entirely on the basis of photos and descriptions online. For many people, that feels a bit impersonal and risky, especially when buying tens of thousands of euros.

In addition, there were a number of practical drawbacks to the model:

  • If you were not satisfied after delivery, the car had to be picked up again. A costly and cumbersome process.
  • The range remained relatively limited, because Bynco depended on what affiliated dealers supplied and also had to purchase selectively itself.
  • The fully online model left little room for personal contact or advice before you made the purchase.

AutoTrack Easy Buy, a nice try, but not really online

AutoTrack has been a well-known name in the Netherlands as a search site for used cars for years. You'll find a huge range of dealers and traders alike. With Easy Buy, AutoTrack tried to take the step towards online car sales. The idea: not only search and compare, but also buy a car directly online.

A smart move, but in practice, this model quickly reached its limits. Indeed, AutoTrack was never developed as an online sales platform, but as an advertising site. The entire structure of the website was aimed at showing cars, not completing a complete purchase process.

This had consequences for the customer:

  • The information was often too limited to make a final online purchase.
  • Pictures and descriptions were not always complete.
  • Financing and insurance were not an integral part of the purchase, so the process consisted of several separate steps.

The result: Easy Buy didn't feel like a real online purchase process, but like an extra layer on top of the existing search site. Many consumers dropped out because there were still too many links between orienting and actually buying. The trust needed for a “click and buy” experience was lacking.

Auto.nl was one of the first parties to dare to make the entire purchase of a car completely online. You choose your car, pay, and it is neatly delivered to your home. In doing so, they led the way in convenience and simplicity.

But in practice, there were clear limitations to this model. Indeed, Auto.nl worked exclusively with the Louwman Group's stock. This meant that your choice as a consumer was always limited to one specific provider, no matter how large that group is. That is simply not enough for a truly varied range.

In addition, the user experience also played a role. The Auto.nl interface is quite small and the photos are limited. Especially when you buy completely online, you want to be able to view the car in detail from all sides. The lack of comprehensive image and product information made it more difficult to make a decision with confidence.

Customer consequences:

  • The information was often too limited to make a final online purchase immediately.
  • Pictures and descriptions weren't always complete or large/detailed enough.
  • Financing and insurance were not an integral part of one streamlined buying flow, so the process consisted of several separate steps and made the experience feel fragmented.

In recent years, various platforms have tried to increase online car sales in the Netherlands. Bynco, AutoTrack Easy Buy and Auto.nl were clear examples of this. All three had good intentions and capitalized on a trend that is unmistakable: more and more consumers want to buy their cars online. But in practice, they broke down on their own limitations.

Bynco focused entirely on online, but that turned out to be the Achilles heel. As a consumer, you had no real contact moment before the purchase. You only saw the car online and had to rely on a “no good, money back” structure. For many customers, that felt too distant, and for dealers, the risk of returns was high.

AutoTrack Easy Buy tried to make the existing search site suitable for online buying, but there was the problem: the website was never designed to function as a complete purchasing platform. Customers received too little information to really make an informed choice. It didn't feel like a smooth, complete online shopping experience.

Auto.nl was a pioneer and dared to make the move to fully online sales, but was limited by working with only the Louwman Group's inventory. That meant: less choice for the customer. Add to that a sober interface and relatively small photos, and you'll see why many customers missed the feeling that they were really getting a complete picture of their future car.
